Rei Amador: A Symbol of Resistance in São Tomé and Príncipe
Rei Amador, born as Amador Vieira, stands as a pivotal figure in the history of São Tomé and Príncipe. Known as the leader of a significant slave rebellion in 1595, Amador's story is one of courage, resistance, and the fight for freedom against Portuguese colonial rule.
Born on São Tomé Island, Amador emerged as a leader among the Angolars, a community of former slaves who had established independent settlements in the densely forested areas of the island. On July 9, 1595, Amador, along with his allies Lazaro and Domingo, initiated a bold uprising against the Portuguese colonizers.
The rebellion quickly gained momentum. Amador's forces, comprising thousands of enslaved Africans, attacked plantations, burned sugar mills, and challenged Portuguese authority across the island. In a powerful symbolic gesture, Amador proclaimed himself the king of São Tomé and Príncipe, adopting the title "Rei Amador, liberator of all the black people."
For several months, between 1595 and 1596, Amador and his followers effectively controlled much of São Tomé Island. Their resistance dealt a significant blow to the Portuguese sugar industry, destroying numerous mills and accelerating the shift of plantation focus to Brazil.
