Ecaterina Teodoroiu (born Cătălina Toderoiu) was a Romanian war hero who distinguished herself during World War I. Born on January 14, 1894, in Vădeni, Kingdom of Romania, she would become known as "The Hero from Jiu" and even the "Joan of Arc of Romania."
Early Life
Teodoroiu grew up in Vădeni, near Târgu Jiu in Romania's Gorj county. Before the war, she was active in the Romanian Scout movement, which prepared her for some of the skills she would later use on the battlefield.
Military Service
When Romania entered World War I in 1916, Teodoroiu initially enrolled as a nurse, caring for the wounded. Her life took a dramatic turn when she learned that her brother Nicolae had died heroically in battle. This personal tragedy motivated her to request permission to join the frontlines as a soldier.
Demonstrating remarkable courage in battle, Teodoroiu impressed military leadership and was eventually promoted to the rank of Second Lieutenant (Sublocotenent) by Queen Marie of Romania. She received command of an infantry platoon and was decorated with the "Military Virtue" medal (both 1st and 2nd class) for her bravery and devotion shown on the battlefield.
Heroic Death
In August-September 1917, during fighting on the Moldovan front at Muncelu, Teodoroiu was fatally wounded by enemy fire. According to accounts, her last words to her soldiers were "Go forward, you are with me!" She died at the young age of 23, having made the ultimate sacrifice for her country.
Legacy
After the war, Ecaterina Teodoroiu was elevated to the status of a national heroine. French General Henri Berthelot named her the "Joan of Arc of Romania" for her outstanding bravery, patriotism, and self-sacrifice.
Initially buried near the front in Fitioneşti, her remains were moved in June 1921 to a crypt in the city center of Târgu Jiu, where a monument was erected in 1936 by sculptor Milița Petrașcu.
Her legacy lives on through numerous monuments across Romania, including those in Slatina (1925), Brăila (1928), and Târgu-Jiu (1936 mausoleum and 1979 statue). Several films have portrayed her life, including productions in 1921, 1930, and 1978. In 1937, the Girls' High School in Târgu-Jiu was named after her (now the National College "Ecaterina Teodoroiu"), and in 1938, her native home was established as a memorial house.
Ecaterina Teodoroiu remains the most celebrated female soldier in Romanian history, a symbol of courage, patriotism, and self-sacrifice during one of the nation's most challenging periods.
