We have a number of these unusual low denomination copper alloy 1 Mon cash coins to offer, which circulated in Japan during the Kan’ei period (1624-1644). Even after the currency reforms under the Meiji Emperor in the late 19th Century, they continued to circulate as 1 Rin, which was a subdivision of the Japanese Sen. It was not until April 1916 that they disappeared from general circulation. In an unusual twist of fate, the use of Mon coins returned to the city of Kan’onji in the Kagawa Prefecture in 2010, where shops will accept them as 30 Yen (currently around 16 pence). These curious and very interesting coins are now available to you in Very Fine condition.
