The White £5 note is iconic. First introduced in 1793, it continued with various tweaks until 1956 when it was retired in favour of the Britannia Blue £5 which itself became iconic in the Bank of England series. Far too big to fit into a regular wallet, the White £5 notes were huge, measuring 210mm x 132 mm. They were printed on one side only, on watermarked paper. Because of ounterfeiting during the Second World War, the Bank introduced a metal security thread into the body of the notes from 1944 onwards.
