Valerian II (256–258 AD) was the son of Gallienus and grandson of Valerian I, serving as Caesar under his father during the Crisis of the Third Century. Elevated to Caesar in 256 AD, Valerian II was intended to secure dynastic stability and assist in governing the empire’s western provinces. His reign as Caesar was brief, as he died around 258 AD, possibly due to natural causes or foul play during unrest in the region. Valerian II’s coinage, primarily featuring his youthful portrait highlighting his imperial lineage, refl ects his symbolic importance in maintaining continuity amidst the empire’s challenges.
