Pattern

Today's glossary term is the "Pattern". A proposed design for a new coin. When a new coin is going to be issued a number of engravers will be asked to submit their designs, before the final design is chosen. Once the actual design is chosen a number of examples will be struck before the date of issue for circulation. Even though these have the same appearance as the coin to be struck, because of the date they are considered to be patterns.
