As part of the great Recoinage Act of 1816, silver coins were struck at the newly relocated Royal Mint on Tower Hill. They were the first halfcrowns struck during his 56 year reign up to that point. Unfortunately, George wasn’t overly impressed by Thomas Wyon’s “Bull Head” design, so Benedetto Pistrucci was commissioned to make a new design, later to become known as the “Roman Head”. It was Pistrucci who became famous for the St George & the dragon design on the Crowns. We have these important “Roman Head” halfcrowns by Pistrucci available in well circulated (VG) grade and the better Fine grade.
