The Princely State of Indore was one of the key states of the Maratha confederacy and became a British protectorate in the early 1800’s, its current location is in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. These silver Rupee’s were issued posthumously in the name of Shah Alam II (AH 1174-1221, 1759-1806 AD) by Shivaji Rao Holkar who was Maharaja of Indore from 1886-1903. The obverse of the coin has the well-known big sun-face featured on coins of Indore with a ‘U’ on the top of the head. The Legend on the coin is in Persian within a floral wreath on the reverse which reads ‘Sikka Mubarak Shah Alam II Indore’ in sprays, which is a reference to the Maharaja himself being the Shah of the Alam (World) of Indore. These coins were minted at the Malharnagar mint and are hand struck, with many variations in the size of the sun-face, the features on the face, the lettering and floral patterns as shown in a few of the available examples illustrated here. They weigh approximately 11.2 grams and are around 20-24mm in diameter. We have only 12 pieces available and this is the first time that we have been able to offer these interesting coins to our collectors. PLEASE NOTE: PHOTOGRAPHY IS REPRESENTATIVE OF THE COIN SUPPLIED
