Constantine the Great’s follis featuring Sol, the sun god, on the reverse reflects the transitional phase of his religious policies (circa 310–315 AD). The obverse typically portrays the laurelled but of Constantine, emphasising his imperial status. The reverse depicts Sol Invictus (“Unconquered Sun”) standing, often radiate, with an outstretched hand or holding a globe, symbolising universal power and divine favour. Accompanied by the inscription “SOLI INVICTO COMITI” (“To the Unconquered Sun, Companion”), the coin highlights Sol’s role as Constantine’s protector. These coins demonstrate Constantine’s strategic use of Sol Invictus to unify the empire, paving the way for his later embrace of Christianity. We have a group of these follis available in Fine grade.
