In 1959, the Commercial Bank merged with the National Bank to form Scotland’s largest bank at the time. These vivid purple £5 notes issued by the Commercial Bank were the last £5 before the merger (PS333) The design was prepared by Stephen Gooden who also designed the George Medal and the Bank of England’s iconic Britannia Blue £5 A portrait of Lord Cockburn, one of the bank’s first directors, appears top centre flanked by allegorical females with scythe and anchor. A Victorian street scene appears on the back. Crisp VF and the last of the Commercial Bank £5 notes. Very limited availability.
