First minted in 1860, the ‘Bun Penny’ was the first bronze penny issued by the Royal Mint, the first of a series that was made from 1860 to 1967, and the 1970 Proof. The “Bun Head” Penny was much smaller than its copper predecessor and was struck from 1860 until 1894. They were mainly struck in London, but the Heaton Mint in Birmingham also helped out with minting in the 1870s and 1880s. The Penny was a popular denomination for everyday use, the “Bun Head” could still be found in circulation in the United Kingdom until the 1960s, up to 100 years after minting. As such, most of them are very heavily worn, but also one of the most popular series collected by coin collectors. Several distinguished specialists – such as Freeman and Gouby - have written papers identifying the numerous varieties of the series, some of them exceptionally rare. Rare varieties can fetch over £1000 even if heavily worn. We have been building up a large stock of these popular coins for many years and are delighted to finally be able to offer them to you and get your Bun Head Penny collection started. We are offering one coin from each decade from the 1860s, 70s, 80s, and 90s, they will be in a well-circulated condition and the dates will be of our choice. However, if you buy a second and third pack of 4, we guarantee that all dates will be different. That’s 12 different dated Bun Head pennies for £35.00, while stocks last.
