In 1893, Queen Victoria’s coinage underwent a major redesign known as the “Old Head” or “Veiled Head” coinage. This was the third and fi nal portrait of Victoria used on British coins during her reign and was designed by the sculptor Thomas Brock. These coins replaced the earlier “Jubilee Head” design (1887–1893), which had been widely criticised for being unfl attering, personally I think it was a rather nice design! ‘Old Head’ Sixpences were only struck for 9 years, we have on off er a small group dated 1897 in wonderful Uncirculated condition. With a mintage of just over 5,000,000, this was the second lowest mintage for ‘Old Head’ Sixpences after the 1894. Uncirculated Silver Sixpences, 128 years old and a scarcer date – what more could you ask for!
