The “Old Head” or “Veiled Head” design was the last portrait of Queen Victoria used on British coinage, introduced in 1893 and continuing until her death in 1901. Designed by Thomas Brock, it depicts an ageing Victoria wearing a widow’s veil, symbolising her prolonged mourning for Prince Albert. We have a small group of Shillings struck in sterling silver all dated 1897 in Uncirculated condition.
