The “Old Head” or “Veiled Head” design was the last portrait of Queen Victoria used on British coinage, introduced in 1893 and continuing until her death in 1901. Designed by Thomas Brock, these impressive Crowns depict an aging Victoria wearing a widow’s veil, symbolising her prolonged mourning for Prince Albert. The Crowns were struck in sterling silver and feature St. George slaying the dragon on the reverse, a famous design by Benedetto Pistrucci introduced in 1817 and still in use on today’s sovereigns. All around Very Fine, better than your usual circulation examples.
