Victoria Imperf Penny red on Cover

These are fantastic items, original envelopes mailed in the 1840’s & 1850’s with the early imperforate (no perforations around the edge) Penny Red stamp. Many of the early issues were actually printed using the same plates used to print the Penny Black stamps. What is also fascinating about these early covers is the almost complete lack of an address! Most of the envelopes have only a name and a town on them so these people must have been well-known at the time. They also often carry additional handstamps showing which post offices handled them on route to their destinations. Fascinating pieces of social and postal history. Limited availability.

Charles III George & Dragon Silver 1 Ounce

This new 1 ounce 999 fine silver coin is the first in a series of coins that will explore the legend of St George. The depiction of St George and the Dragon has long been a tradition on British coinage, with Benedetto Pistrucci’s interpretation on the gold sovereign coin being the most well known. The legend of St George slaying the dragon symbolises victory of good over evil, courage in the face of danger, and protection of the realm, ideals which solidify St George’s importance as a figure of national pride. The obverse of the coin bears the uncrowned portrait of King Charles III designed by sculptor Martin Jennings, along with the coin’s monetary denomination of 2 pounds. The reverse of the coin features a dramatic modern interpretation of the St George design by Jody Clark which is set upon a textured background. The design is surrounded by a border of words detailing the coin’s year, weight and fineness and the date of 2024 also appears in the exergue beneath the design. A striking new design and the first of a new series.
