We are often asked which is our favourite British coin, and our response usually stuns the person asking. It is not a big gold coin or a large silver coin, it is in fact one of the smallest Victorian copper coins struck. It is the Half Farthing of Queen Victoria issued from 1839 until 1856. What we like about this coin is not only the unusual denomination but also that it was used overseas in some of our Crown Colonies. They only struck it in copper and the value was so low, even at the time of issue everyone could and did use them. We like this coin because it tells a story and although many people have heard of a Farthing most have never heard of a Half Farthing.
