Victorian groats were issued for circulation from 1838 to 1855. Struck in sterling silver with a value of Four Pence, groats were often used in overseas trade, particularly in Malta and the West Indies. After a 33 year hiatus, remarkably the groat made a comeback in 1888, for one year only, the only difference being the depiction of Victoria’s Jubilee Head on the obverse. We have a small group of these one-off groats, they are in virtually Mint State and must have been together since being struck at the mint. 137 years old, the last ever groat, a one-year type and in virtually mint state, what is there not to like? But hurry, stock is very limited.
