In 1875, Great Britain was in the midst of the Victorian era, under the reign of Queen Victoria (1837–1901) and the Conservative government of Benjamin Disraeli. On the political front, Disraeli’s government bought the Khedive of Egypt’s shares in the Suez Canal Company for about £4 million. This gave Britain a major strategic and economic advantage in controlling the route to India and the East — a key moment in the growth of the British Empire. To celebrate this 150 year milestone, we have on off er some nice bronze farthings from this year. They were struck at The Royal Mint in London, but also at the Heaton mint in Birmingham – this is denoted by a ‘H’ under the date.
