In 1980, two ground-breaking books were published by Michael Marsh, one was entitled The Gold Sovereign and the other The Gold Half-Sovereign. They quickly became the essential reference works for collectors of these coins. Michael Marsh studiously recorded every variety that he came across and published revised editions of his books in 1999 and 2002. Sadly, he died in 2006 but his work has now been carried on by Steve Hill who has not only updated and fully revised the work on the Sovereigns and Half-Sovereigns but has incorporated all of the earlier issues going back to the very first Sovereign in 1489.
