After the end of apartheid, the new constitution of South Africa initially retained the old coat of arms granted back in 1910, and this continued until 2000. This set of 8 uncirculated coins dates from the late 1980s and 1990s when the old arms remained in use and it was designed to represent the four provinces of Cape of Good Hope, Natal, Orange Free State and Transvaal. The country name is also only in English and Afrikaans. The reverse of the coins all have local flora and fauna.
