The Royal Bank of Scotland has its roots in the 18th century From 1727 it has absorbed other banks along the way to be the largest Scottish note issuing bank today. These £1 notes reflect the Lizars design first introduced in 1832 So called, because the central feature was the crowned portrait of George I flanked by the royal lion and unicorn which was designed by renowned engraver W H Lizars. Our notes are from much more recent times, dating between the 1950’s and 1964 (P324). The style is still 19th century with allegorical females to the left and right. Bank buildings on Edinburgh and Glasgow adorn the back. The notes on offer this issue are particularly choice grading GEF/AU.
