The visit of Pope John Paul II to the United Kingdom in 1982 was the first visit here by a reigning Pope. The Pope arrived in the UK on Friday 28 May and visited nine cities, delivering 16 major addresses and meeting with Queen Elizabeth II, the Supreme Governor of the Church of England. This medal was struck to commemorate the event, it is 38mm in diameter, quite thick at 4mm and struck in cupro-nickel and gilt. The obverse bears a high relief portrait of Pope John Paul II with the legend JOANNES PAVLVS II PONT. MAX and the reverse has the arms of Pope John Paul II with the legend TO COMMEMORATE THE HOLY FATHERS VISIT TO THE PEOPLE OF GREAT BRITAIN – 1982- LORD PRAY FOR US. PLEASE NOTE: IT HAS NO CASE
