In 1663, King Charles II appointed John Roettier as his Chief Engraver. This caused Thomas Simon, who had been Charles I’s choice to try and get his position back. So he produced a crown now known as ‘The Petition Crown’. Around the edge he produced two lines of text petitioning the King to re-think his appointment. Even today the inclusion of two lines of text is an almost impossible thing to do. 300+ years ago this is even more wonderful. The Petition Crown is considered one of our most beautiful crowns. It is almost our most expensive with one selling at auction for almost one million dollars! In 2023, our Royal Mint decided to replicate this feat. They issued a pair of Petition Crowns one obverse and one reverse in gleaming Silver Proof. But this time the obverse had King Charles III on it. Each piece weighs 2 ounces of 999 fine silver, so the total weight is 4 ounces and in silver alone is worth about £230. The two line edge has been copied and each is in a special thick capsule so you can clearly read the inscription. Then the pair are placed in an exclusive presentation case. The whole package is just stunning. They only made 1,790 sets and the Royal Mint has long been sold out. We have managed to obtain a few of these beautiful and rare sets, but supplies are very limited.
