The Commercial Bank of Scotland merged with the National Bank of Scotland in 1959 to become the National Commercial Bank of Scotland, Scotland’s biggest bank at the time. The first £1 notes to be issued by the new bank were a One Year type, printed in blue and dated 1959 (P265) The front is dominated by a view of the Forth Railway Bridge with the Arms of the bank on the back. We recently bought a superb group of 1959 £1 notes which have seen no circulation whatsoever. They, like most notes of the period, have a roll fold at the centre, this being the way Scottish notes were traditionally issued. They strictly grade, therefore, as Crisp EF/EF+.
