Officially part of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ngorno Karabakh lies 170 miles west of the capital Baku and close to the border with Armenia. In 1991, in a referendum, boycotted by Azerbaijan, the mainly Armenian Christian population voted to create an independent state. After much fighting a ceasefire was declared in 1994. In 2023 Azerbaijan launched one of its many military offensives, succeeding finally in taking down the independent state. This lead to an exodus of almost the entire Armenian population. This pair of notes dated 2004 are the only notes in the name of Ngorno-Karabakh. They were printed in Austria and the illustrations reflect the fact that the enclave was predominately Christian. We offer Crisp Uncirculated examples of the 2 and 10 dram dated 2004.
