Merlyn Lowther will go down in history as the fi rst woman to serve as Chief Cashier at the Bank of England. She served between 1999 and 2003. It was during her term that the Bank of England modifi ed the design on the fronts and changed the backs from featuring Charles Dickens to featuring Charles Darwin. The introduction did not go smoothly. The copyright information around the watermark area on the first notes issued included an extra ’the’ in the text. After millions had already been printed, the error was corrected and this is the version we are offering now (B390) Available in Crisp EF.
