The Mamluk Sultanate covered what we now know as Egypt, the Levant and Hejaz from the mid-13th century to the early 16th century. The empire itself was ruled by a military caste of freed slave soldiers (mamluks) and headed by a sultan. These fractional dirhams were struck in the city of Hamah (Syria) during the reign of Sha’ban II, who was sultan of the Bahri dynasty between 1363 and 1377.
