These unissued cheques were prepared for issue during the very early years of the 20th century for the Ulverston branch of the Lancaster Banking Company Limited.
The cheque today is in danger of disappearing but when these cheques were prepared, they were the principal way of buying goods. They come complete with counterfoil and an embossed One Penny Stamp.
The Lancaster Banking Company was one of the first joint stock banking companies in England and operated until 1907 when it merged with The Manchester and Liverpool District banking Company. This latter bank, restyled as The District Bank, eventually became part of the National Westminster Group.
