It was during the Second World War that the Bank of England introduced an embedded security thread in its notes to protect them from counterfeiters. They also changed the colour from traditional green to blue pink. Once the war was over, the Bank decided to use up its stockpiled pre-war supply of green Unthreaded paper before reverting to printing on the newer Threaded variety. This process took a mere three months making this the Britannia Pound with the smallest printing figures.
