The image of a she wolf suckling the twins Romulus and Remus has been a symbol of Rome since ancient times. Legend has it that the twins were abandoned to die as infants, supposedly saved by the god Tiberius, father of the river Tiber, and survived after being suckled by the she-wolf. Eventually Romulus, killed his brother, went on to found the city of Rome and serve as its first king. The famous image of the she wolf Lupa Capitolina statue appears on the back of this 5 lire note from the 1930’s (P54b) The front is quite simple with a wreath with fruit to the left and a red seal with the head of Italia to the right. We are delighted to offer Crisp VF examples of the Romulus and Remus note for just.
