The Kingdom of Italy was created in 1861, when Victor Emmanuel II of Sardinia-Piedmont was proclaimed King of Italy. This followed a decades-long process whereby the Sardinia gradually took control of the other states on the Italian peninsula. We are now able to off er the fi rst coins struck for the new country back in the 1860s. They are the bronze 5 and 10 centesimi coins, both of which bear the image of the king on the obverse. On the reverse is the star of Italy above the date and value within a wreath of laurel and oak branches. The coins are in Fine-Very Fine condition.
