These 1000 drachma notes were issued during the Italian Occupation of the Ionian Islands during the Second World War. They were intended to replace the currency of the Bank of Greece which circulated at the time. The 1000 drachma was the largest denomination issued (PM17) The front is dominated by a portrait of Julius Caesar while the back is adorned by details from a portion of the Parthenon Frieze found in the Acropolis Museum today.
