We have just bought a group of lovely high grade silver Indian Rupees issued early in the reign of George V. They were struck in .917 silver, so not quite as high as our own Sterling silver coins at the time and they weigh 11.66 grams so were roughly equivalent to the our Florin, or two shilling coin. The coins were minted at both the Bombay and Calcutta mints with the coins of the Bombay mint bearing a small dot on the reverse under the rosette at the bottom of the design. Mintages were similar for both mints but the distance between them of nearly 2000km meant that they were able to produce coins in large enough volume and to distribute them more easily without having to transport them long distances. Buy just one or buy both mints and save a little.
