The prosperous city of Histiaia on the Island of Euboia was so ancient is was even mentioned in the Iliad! Fought over by Athens and Sparta in the 5th Century B.C. it was conquered in 341 B.C. by Philip II of Macedon, father of Alexander the Great. After the death of Alexander it was fought over by his successors, so in the 3rd Century B.C. all the cities on the island united for protection to form the Euboian League. The League came under the power of Rome about 194 B.C., finally having peace. As part of the League Histiaia struck these Silver Tetrobols in the 3rd Century B.C.
