In 1247, Henry III ordered a major recoinage to combat “coin-clipping” (removing silver from coin edges), replacing the “short cross” pennies with a new “long cross” design to make such fraud easier to detect. The Silver Penny was just about the only circulating denomination during the 13th Century. They were struck from 1247 until 1278 across several Provincial mints, but mainly in the strongholds of London and Canterbury. We offer you these fascinating pennies Canterbury in Fine condition.
