Hammered Silver Halfgroats of Charles I

Charles I was King of England from 1625 until his execution on January 31st 1649, exactly 377 years ago. We have on offer Halfgroats from this turbulent reign. The Halfgroats off ered were struck at The Tower Mint in the Tower of London, those predating 1642 were struck while the mint was under the King’s control, although they continued to be struck until his death while the mint was under the control of Parliament. The Halfgroat, or Twopence was a small sterling silver coins, used in small, everyday transactions. They are popular with collectors for their diff erent bust designs and different mintmarks, which are small symbols punched on the dies that date the coins. They all bare the portrait of the King on the obverse with II behind to signify two pence. The all bare the reverse latin legend around the shield reading “IUSTITIA THRONVM FIRMAT” (“Justice sustains the throne”). Available in well-circulated VG grade and the better Fine.
