Gurneys, Birkbecks, Barclay & Buxton, Aylsham, 18(93), Pay to Bearer, red oval duty stamp, printed by Fletcher & Son - straight, light brown underprint, used, Type 4b
A quartet of cheques issued in the latter years of the 19th century and drawn on the Commercial Bank of Scotland. They are in various colours andvignettes include a castle or a view of the Bank Headquarters. All are filled in by hand and carry a One Penny duty stamp, either embossed or printed.
It wasn’t that long ago that when you wrote cheques, they would be returned to you by the bank. That of course rarely happens these days. But in the 19th Century it certainly was the norm which is how we come to have access to these cheques drawn on the Isle of Man Banking Company Limited and dated in the 1860’s and 1870’s.
