During World War II , the Greek economy suffered hyperinflation necessitating high denomination banknotes to be issued.This pair of 1 and 5 million drachma notes are both dated 1944.(P127/8 ) Their design includes references to Greece’s ancient past. The 1 million drachma has an illustration of the statue of the Youth of Antikythera on the front with ruins of the Temple of Poseidon on the back. The 5 million drachma features a silver decadrachm coin from Syracuse with Arethusa and three dolphins Crisp AU/Unc.
