The portraits on these 50 and 1000 marks, dated 1924 ,were taken from paintings by Renaissance artist Hans Holbein (P177/8). This series was quite shortlived. It followed the rentenmark which had been introduced to stabilise the economy, ravaged by hyperinflation the year previously.. They were backed by gold and were the first notes to be denominated in reichsmark. Both are densely engraved. Grading Fine we offer this Holbein Pair.
