German East Africa came into being in the late 1880’s and occupied the territory we know as mainland Tanzania today along with parts of Burundi and Rwanda. During the 1st World War a guerrilla war was fought against the British which was finally ended when leaders agreed to a ceasefire 3 days after the end of the war. Because of a naval blockade during the war, currency for German East Africa had to be printed locally and was of necessity pretty crude in appearance This issue we offer issues of the 1 rupie dated 1915/16 for German East Africa. Small, simply printed on brown card like paper in VG-F condition.
