We are often asked why is the 1950 King George VI Penny Rare? The answer is that although they were struck at the Royal Mint, the entire mintage was sent to our colonies overseas. Because of World War II there was a shortage there of small change. So none of the 1950 pennies were available in this country. It was only when some Americans discovered that all the 1950 pennies were released overseas that some were off ered for sale in this country.
