In 1994, the Bank of England celebrated its Tercentenary 1694-1994. To mark this event the new £50 which was issued the same year, featured the portrait of Sir John Houblon on the back. Sir John had been the first Governor of the bank. His influence has echoed down the centuries in the dress of the famous Bank of England Gatekeepers whose uniform is based on Sir John’s staff livery. G E A Kentfield was the first to sign this design and it is his notes which we offer today in Crisp Uncirculated (B377).
