The last series of notes issued by France in its own name before joining the Euro, was very colourful. These 200 franc notes, dated 1996 are in uncirculated condition. (P15) They celebrate Gustave Eiffel, famous for the tower he built as a temporary structure for the 1889 Exposition Universelle held in Paris that year. Now, of course the iconic Eiff el Tower is seen as a symbol of France itself. The front features a portrait of Eiff el, the sweep of the Tower and a view of the Garabit Railway Viaduct, another of his constructions. On the back, a vignette shows people strolling on the Champs de Mars beneath the tower and a view of the Palais de Beaux Arts and the glass roof of the Gallerie des Machines. Uncirculated.
