Edward III Silver Pennies from Durham
divider
Edward III became King of England in 1327 at just 14 years of age. His reign lasted 50 years before his death in 1377. It was a reign remembered for the beginning of the Hundred Years' War with France in 1337 and the Black Death which arrived in England in the late 1340s, killing a significant portion of the population. He won many military victories in the early stages of the war with France, before formally claiming the French throne in 1340. A title held by future English monarchs until 1453, when under Henry VI, all territory in France was lost, except for Calais. In the last issue we offered you a Penny from the London mint, this time we can offer you an Edward III Penny from the Northern Mint of Durham.
