Edward I of England, also known as “Longshanks” or the “Hammer of the Scots,” was a powerful and ambitious king. He reigned from 1272 to 1307. Edward reformed English law and was instrumental in the development of Parliament. He led successful military campaigns in Wales, his attempts to conquer Scotland were met with fierce resistance, notably from William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. During his reign, silver pennies were widely circulated and set the standard for sterling pennies, often counterfeited on the continent. They were struck at various mints across the country, we have some from the London mint.
