Early George III Halfpennies

divider
There was a shortage of small change throughout the 18th century. This worsened in the 1770’s as the Mint failed to issue enough official copper coinage to meet the needs of everyday transactions. This led to a massive increase in counterfeit halfpennies and helped set the stage for the production of private and provincial tokens as substitutes for small change during the 1780s and 1790s. We rarely offer these George III halfpennies from the 1770’s as they are difficult to find in numbers, especially compared to the very common 1799, 1806 and 1807 issues struck at the Soho mint in Birmingham 20 years later. We have these interesting halfpennies available in Fair, VG and Fine Grades, your choice.
