The Chola Empire covered much of what is now southern India, but grew to include overseas protectorates in modern day Sri Lanka and as far away as Thailand and Malaysia. These copper massa coins date back to the reign of Raja Chola I between 985 and 1014 AD. It has sometimes been referred to as the “Octopus Man” because of what looks like tentacles on the reverse.
