For most of its history since independence was declared in 1818, Chile has used the peso as its currency. However in 1960 the new escudo was introduced to help curb inflation, but over the next 15-year period the new coinage also fell victim to devaluations and inflation before being replaced by the new peso in 1975. This set of 9 coins covers the early years of that period and range from 1 centesimo to 5 escudos.
