In 1937 for the Coronation of King George VI the Royal Mint issued new coins including the first ever Brass Threepence. In 1937 they also issued the ‘usual’ silver threepence, but for the first time ever they issued the new coin, the Brass Threepence. This coin turned out to be very popular with both the public and coin collectors. You have George VI portrait on one side and thrift on the other side. It was a most unusual shape and struck in nickel brass. So you not only have a new coin but a new coin for the King’s Coronation. We have managed to buy a wonderful group of these fi rst year ever brass threepences.
