G E A Kentfield Historical £10 Enhanced B369 Unc

Issued in 1993, these £10 notes are in Crisp Uncirculated condition (B369) They bear the signature of Graham Kentfield as Chief Cashier, a post he held until 1999. Printed on sheetfed presses, the front has a mature portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with a vignette of Britannia and a diamond-shaped symbol to assist the partially sighted. The back features a portrait of Charles Dickens and an illustration of the cricket match between Dingley Dell and All Muggleton, from his first novel The Pickwick Papers. Sold in Crisp Uncirculated.

In 1990, the Bank of England unveiled a new series of banknotes. The first denomination to appear was the £5. It was distinguished by a much larger portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the front. The back featured the portrait of railway engineer George Stephenson, alongside a vignette of his most famous locomotive The Rocket (B357) Graham Gill was Chief Cashier. The first prefix for this new design was the letter A. We can offer this important note in two ways both in Uncirculated - notes with the very first prefix A01.

The design for this £50 note was unveiled in 1981 when Somerset was Chief Cashier and it was declared a masterpiece of design. A portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in State Robes adorns the front while on the back we find a portrait of Sir Christopher Wren and his own masterpiece, St Paul’s Cathedral, viewed from the River Thames. Our St Paul’s £50 notes are signed by G M Gill who followed Somerset as Chief Cashier (B356) As time passes, these are proving more and more elusive. In 1983 when these plastic £1 notes were issued by the Isle of Man, they were considered revolutionary. They were both the first and last £1 note printed on plastic in the British Isles (P38) The plastic was not the silky polymer we know today. It was printed on Tyvek and was shortlived being replaced 4 years later with a paper issue. Available in Unc.

It was while J B Page was Chief Cashier at the Bank of England that the Pictorial £10 was first introduced.(B330) This was in 1975. Through a series of Chief Cashiers and a few design tweaks, it was to last until 1992 when the Historical Series replaced it. The front has the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II while the back features a portrait of Florence Nightingale alongside a vignette of her hospital work at Scutari during the Crimean War. We recently purchased a group of the Page Nightingale £10 in Crisp AUncirculated. A lovely issue!

First issued in 1963 a youthful portrait of Queen Elizabeth is on the front and a rendition of a Young Britannia, based on the artist Reynolds Stone’s daughter, is on the back. This impressive £100 note was issued by the Island of Jersey in 2012 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee (P37a) The front is dominated by a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II commissioned by Jersey in 2003. A gold overprint with a Crowned EIIR appears to the left. The Queen wears a pearl necklace and the George IV State Diadem. A thick holographic thread is to the far right. On the back, the text is in English, French and Norman giving a nod to the Queen’s role in Jersey as Duke of Normandy. The Royal Mace dominates the back and the Jersey flag is in the background. All in all, a stunning note from Queen Elizabeth’s last Jubilee in Crisp Uncirculated.

In 1995, Jersey celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the liberation of the island after the Second World War. The Channel Islands were the only part of Britain to be occupied by German forces during the war. The front follows the usual design with a facing portrait of Elizabeth II with an overprint to the left marking the 50th Anniversary and a special prefix LJ (Liberation of Jersey) The back depicts a Wartime Jersey £1 note and a view of the Liberation Monument (P25). Uncirculated.

In March 2002, the Bank of England introduced a new design for the £5 note with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the front and Elizabeth Fry, prison reformer, on the back. (B393) Within days, the Bank suspended the issue. Reports were coming in that the serial numbers could be easily rubbed off. The problem was addressed and in August 2002 the issue was resumed. We are offering Crisp Uncirculated examples of the very first £5 notes from this series all with the prefix HA01 and intact. Increasingly difficult to find in Uncirculated!

In 2022, Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Platinum Jubilee This so-called Britannia Pound was produced in the Netherlands as a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of her Platinum Jubilee in 2022. It was printed at the famous printer Enschede. The Queen is shown here wearing a hat, familiar to us all from her later years. The back refers to Her Majesty’s Coronation in 1953 with Westminster Abbey in the background. A Platinum Tribute in Crisp Uncirculated.
